What is your current job?
Graduate Teaching Assistant

What was your international learning experience?
I was a graduate student and a teaching assistant for the 2017 International Field School in the Philippines (Apr 29 to May 9, 2017). There were six students (three undergraduate and three graduate, including myself), one graduate student from the University of the Philippines, and one geologist from a mining company (which was a sponsor), who all visited numerous interesting geological sights, including lahar deposits, still-functioning mines, and a volcano.

We also organized a Geology Summit, where we invited several speakers, including the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines, Undersecretary for the Environment and Natural Resources, and two professors from the University of the Philippines to give some talks about the importance of mining and efforts in making such activities more sustainable. We also organized a forum highlighting corporate social responsibility, the environment, and indigenous peoples’ involvement in mining activities, presenting how Canada does the three topics in mining activities, and also gathering the insights of the participants so that we can be provided with another perspective on the current trends on mining in the Philippines.

How did that experience impact you?
The International Field School was a good way to introduce the geology, as well as the culture, of the Philippines to Canadian students. Being from the Philippines myself, I was very excited that the field school would be there. I had the pleasure of introducing the geology and cultural spots, which they enjoyed. Overall, we were provided with new academic, as well as cultural, insights, which will eventually allow us to understand and appreciate other cultures to better work with them in the future.

Why should students embrace international learning experiences?
International learning experiences are a good way on exposing Canadian students to the culture, traditions, work ethics, and issues prevalent in other countries. These will provide them with the necessary tools and experience on how to effectively work and communicate with the locals for a fruitful working environment.

What is a fun fact about you?
I enjoy playing electric guitar or going to the gym for de-stressing.
